Learning With a Divergent Mind

Books: The Illustrated Guide to Dyslexia and Its Amazing People

Nothing is worse to explain dyslexia to parents and children than a predominantly text based book that uses language such as ‘orthographic processing’, or ‘phonemic awareness’.  It isn’t that these concepts aren’t important to understand, but when beginning the journey of understanding dyslexia it is a very intimidating place to start.  Enter this wonderfully text simple, graphics heavy book, The Illustrated Guide to Dyslexia and Its Amazing People**. It is a great starting point for parents and children just beginning to learn about dyslexia.  The content is simple, accurate, and clear with bold text in a larger type which makes it much easier for someone with dyslexia to read.  Not only does it cover the basic facts about dyslexia and the more common challenges faced by people with dyslexia, it also profiles 18 professionals from a wide range of fields (surgeon to athlete to designer to engineer, etc.) who have dyslexia and who believe that they have become successful in their fields because they have dyslexia.  It doesn’t sugar coat the fact that having dyslexia means that you will have to work harder than others, but it is very encouraging and references some good resources for further reading and research.  If you are looking for detailed information about dyslexia, this is not the book you’re looking for as you will find it too general, but if you want a solid high level overview that clearly explains what dyslexia is and is not, is suitable to read with children, along with encouragement and inspiration, then this is the book for you.
